
Why Gallium Iodide Lamps are a Secret Weapon for Textiles
Most people don’t think about it, but UV curing is basically the invisible glue holding the textile industry together. From the moment a piece of raw fabric hits the line to the second it becomes a shirt, UV light is doing the heavy lifting. We use custom gallium iodide (GaI) lamps because they hit a very specific sweet spot—between 250nm and 350nm. Standard mercury lamps just can’t touch that range. If you’re using specialized inks or adhesives, you need this specific spectrum, or they simply won’t set. The science bit, kept simple Standard lamps often struggle with intensity in the mid-UV range. By adding gallium iodide to the mix, we shift the light’s output. The result? A concentrated punch of energy that actually sinks deep into thick fibers. If you’re running heavy denim or those tricky synthetic blends, this is where you see the magic. Everything cures faster. And when things cure faster, you can speed up your conveyor belt without worrying about wet ink. Getting the hardware right We build these to fit into the gear you already have on your floor. Most of our GaI tubes are high-wattage because you need consistent power across a wide web of fabric. But here’s a heads-up:**check your ballasts.**These lamps are thirsty for power. If your power supply isn’t rated for the specific wattage of the GaI fill, you’re going to fry your electrodes way sooner than you should. We also use high-purity quartz envelopes. Why? Because cheap glass “solarizes.” It turns brown over time as it absorbs the UV light, which kills your output and leaves you with a useless lamp. Real-world talk: The trade-offs Whether it’s digital textile printing (DTP) or curing synthetic fibers, these lamps make sure your ink stays put. No smudging when the fabric gets folded. It’s a relief. But it’s not all sunshine.**GaI lamps run hot.**Seriously hot. You’ve got to make sure your cooling fans or water-jackets are working perfectly. If the lamp head overheats, the quartz seal will fail, and that’s a bad day for everyone. One last thing: keep those reflectors clean. Dust is the enemy here. A dirty mirror kills your intensity, which forces you to run the lamps longer, which kills the lifespan of the bulb. Just keep them wiped down, and you’ll be golden.
