Getting the Most Out of Your Mercury UV Bulbs
When we sat down to build our UV lamp modules, we didn’t want to make something that just “worked” on paper. We wanted something that could actually survive the chaos of an industrial print shop. At the heart of it all is the mercury vapor bulb. These things are workhorses. They pump out a broad spectrum of UV—mostly UVC and UVB—which is what makes your inks and coatings snap dry the second they hit the light. Speed vs. Heat Here is the real trade-off: wattage and line speed. If you want to crank up the conveyor and fly through your jobs without worrying about under-curing, you need a higher wattage bulb. It’s simple. But there’s a catch. These lamps getinsanely hot. If your fans decide to quit or your reflectors get gunked up with dust, that quartz envelope is going to stress out and pop. Keep it cool, or you’ll be replacing bulbs way more often than you’d like. The Glass Matters We don’t use just any glass. We use high-purity fused quartz. Why? Because regular glass would just soak up all that short-wave UV radiation. Quartz lets it fly right through. Inside, we’ve pressurized the mercury vapor to hit those perfect spectral peaks. And since we know every shop is different, we can tweak the length and diameter of the bulb. That way, it just slides right into your existing setup. No need to tear apart your machine frame or spend a weekend rebuilding the chassis. Keeping Things Running Nobody likes downtime. That’s why we wired these modules for fast swaps. Standard connectors mean you can get a new lamp in and get back to work in minutes. One quick tip: always double-check your ballast settings when you put in a new bulb. If the ballast is off, it’ll either starve the lamp or overdrive it. Either way, you’re basically cutting the life of your bulb in half. Lastly, keep it clean. I can’t stress this enough. Even a little bit of dust on the quartz creates hotspots. Those hotspots lead to cracks, and cracks lead to a dead lamp. Keep the dust away, and these things will treat you right.
